Destiny Is In a Decision

A Lesson in Leadership

Based on the Sunday message from Pastor Charles Blake, West Angeles COGIC, drawn from the story of Abraham and his nephew Lot (Genesis 13:5-12).

The decisions we make throughout life are among the most important choices we will ever face. Every decision has the potential to influence the direction of our lives, shaping not only our future but also the lives of those around us.

There are times when a critical decision must be made to prevent loss or avoid unnecessary consequences. Yet when we fail to give careful thought to our choices, the results can be costly. Many of us have looked back on a poor decision and asked ourselves, "What was I thinking?"

Some decisions are easily corrected, resulting in only minor setbacks. Others carry consequences that can last for years. Certain decisions have the power to alter the entire course of our lives and affect generations beyond our own.

Leadership requires wisdom, discernment, and the willingness to consider not only the immediate benefits of a decision but also its long term impact.

A powerful example of this principle is found in the biblical account of Abraham and Lot. As their wealth increased, conflict arose between their herdsmen because the land could no longer support both households. To preserve peace, Abraham graciously allowed Lot to choose the land he desired.

Lot selected what appeared to be the most fertile and prosperous region. From a natural perspective, it seemed like the obvious choice. However, his decision was based primarily on what he could see rather than on the character and influence of the people who lived there.

It was not long before conflict engulfed the region Lot had chosen. He lost his possessions when invading armies captured the city, and Abraham had to rescue him and recover everything that had been taken.

Rather than recognizing the warning signs and moving away from the unhealthy environment, Lot settled even deeper within the city. As Pastor Blake observed, Lot's judgment had become influenced, even jaded, by the culture surrounding him. A leader can gradually become aligned with the values and lifestyle of the environment they choose to embrace.

Ultimately, Lot was forced to flee for his life when God sent angels to destroy the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. During his escape, he suffered the tragic loss of his wife. The consequences of his decisions extended far beyond his own lifetime, as his descendants became nations that opposed Abraham's descendants and the nation of Israel for generations.

Lot's story reminds us that decisions that appear insignificant in the moment can produce monumental consequences over time. Choices motivated by comfort, wealth, pleasure, prestige, or personal convenience may determine the course of our destiny.

For this reason, we must carefully examine even the small decisions we make. We should ask ourselves:

  • Why am I making this choice?
  • What values or beliefs are influencing my decision?
  • Will this decision move me closer to God's purpose or farther away from it?

The greatest tragedy in Lot's story is not simply what he lost. It is what he missed. Although he lived near Abraham and experienced many of Abraham's blessings, he failed to inherit the fullness of God's promise because of the choices he made.

Takeaway

Every decision carries the potential to move us either toward or away from our God given purpose.

Could a decision you make today lead you away from your destiny and purpose?

Remember: your destiny is in your decision.
